Buttweld vs Socket Weld Fittings: Which Should You Use?

Compare buttweld (ASME B16.9) and socket weld (ASME B16.11) pipe fittings: sizes, strength, inspection, cost and where each one is the better choice.

Both buttweld and socket weld fittings create permanent welded joints, but they are made differently, follow different standards and suit different jobs. Here is how to decide.

Buttweld fittings (ASME B16.9)

Buttweld fittings have bevelled ends that are welded edge-to-edge to the pipe with a full-penetration weld. The bore matches the pipe, so flow is smooth with no pockets for fluid to collect. The joint is as strong as the pipe and can be inspected by radiography. Elbows come in long radius (bend radius 1.5 × nominal size) and short radius (1 × nominal size) versions, along with tees, reducers, caps and stub ends.

Socket weld fittings (ASME B16.11)

Socket weld fittings are forged, with a socket that the pipe slides into before a fillet weld is laid around the outside. They are rated in Class 3000, 6000 and 9000 and are generally used for small-bore piping, typically NPS 2 and below. Fit-up is quick because the socket aligns the pipe, and there is no weld metal inside the bore.

Before welding, pull the pipe back to leave about 1.6 mm (1/16 in) between the pipe end and the socket shoulder. This gap lets the weld shrink without cracking.

Which one to use

Choose buttweld for larger lines, severe cyclic or fatigue service, corrosive fluids where a crevice could cause problems, and anywhere volumetric weld inspection is required. Choose socket weld for small-bore, high-pressure process, instrument and utility lines where quick, reliable fit-up matters more. Your project piping specification has the final say, so always check it first.
