BasisTheoretical
Theoretical weight from nominal dimensions. Actual weight varies with mill tolerances.
How it works
The formula
Weight = cross-sectional area × length × density. With dimensions in mm and density in g/cm³:
kg = area (mm²) × length (mm) × ρ ÷ 1,000,000
For carbon steel pipe the shortcut is 0.02466 × WT × (OD − WT) kg/m. Read the full pipe weight guide.
Frequently asked questions
How is metal weight calculated?
Weight equals cross-sectional area × length × density. For example, a carbon steel pipe weighs 0.02466 × wall thickness × (outside diameter − wall thickness) kg per metre, with dimensions in mm.
What density is used for stainless steel?
We use 7.93 g/cm³ for 304/304L and 7.98 g/cm³ for 316/316L. Carbon and alloy steel use 7.85 g/cm³, and duplex grades 7.80 g/cm³.
How accurate is the calculator?
It gives theoretical weight from nominal dimensions. Actual weight varies with manufacturing tolerances, so use it for estimates, freight planning and quotation checks.
Which pipe sizes are pre-filled?
NPS 1/2" to 12" with outside diameters and Schedule 40 and 80 wall thicknesses from ASME B36.10. You can also enter any custom size.
